Stensdal Group becomes the first Butterfly Partner with multiple locations to secure habitats for butterflies. Initially, 25,000 sqm. green areas on five Stensdal properties in Greater Copenhagen will be transformed into butterfly-friendly areas.
Danish butterflies are under pressure, and in recent years the Danish population has declined significantly. There are far too few habitats left in Denmark where the butterflies can breed and find food, but the Stensdal Group wants to change that.
That's why we have just signed an agreement with the Danish Society for Nature Conservation to become a Butterfly Partner. With this agreement, we will be converting some of our outdoor areas into wildflower meadows that can attract butterflies, wild bees and other insects.
"We are very pleased that Stensdal Group wants to make a concrete difference for our endangered butterflies. We know that butterflies and wild bees urgently need habitats in one of the world's most cultivated countries. Therefore, it is of great importance when a company like Stensdal Group takes responsibility and converts some of its areas into insect-friendly nature," says project manager Simon Leed Krøs from the Danish Society for Nature Conservation.
25,000 square meters for butterflies
The Danish Society for Nature Conservation has already entered into partnerships with a number of Danish companies that want to give butterflies a helping hand. However, Stensdal Group is the first partner to convert several areas into butterfly-friendly nature.
With the agreement, outdoor areas at properties in Høje-Taastrup, Brøndby, Rødovre and Ballerup will be planted with beautiful, flowering plants. In total, more than 25,000 square meters will be transformed into butterfly nature in 2020, while several of our green outdoor areas will become insect-friendly within the next few years.
"We own and operate more than 115,000 square meters of properties in Greater Copenhagen and have a very strong focus on making the properties as green as we can with energy renovation and other initiatives. It is therefore natural for us to use the opportunity we have to lay out more than 25,000 square meters of green areas to contribute to better habitats and increased biodiversity. We are proud to be able to display the Butterfly Partnership as visible proof that we are making a positive contribution - also in the business districts," says Søren Stensdal, CEO of Stensdal Group.
We leave it alone - on purpose
To tenants and passers-by, the change to the wild butterfly nature may look like Stensdal Group's property service has fallen off the wagon and left it alone. But there is a plan, as Property Manager Søren Andersen explains: "We leave it alone - on purpose. Right now it's very exciting because we get the opportunity to geek out about grass varieties, wild nature, butterflies, bees and not least plants, bushes and trees that help biodiversity on our properties. Therefore, we can only reassure tenants who may be used to 'orderly conditions' that the green care and maintenance of the outdoor areas is under control."
Stensdal Group is marking the green habitats with special signs that are being erected at the five properties. The signs will become a permanent marker of the butterfly areas.
